A reflective, honest, and rare look into hidden systems.
Guilty Until Proven Innocent, presented by artist Sephine Milan, was featured at the Witt Gallery at Sacramento State on November 8, 2025 as part of the SPE West Chapter Conference. Milan introduced audiences to her ongoing project that reconstructs memories of incarceration through experimental image-making, blending photography, AI‑generated visuals, and annotated archival materials to rebuild moments she was never permitted to document.
The event centered on examining the prison system and the far‑reaching effects it has on individuals, families, and entire communities. Milan’s work exposes a part of American society that the public rarely sees—one that is intentionally hidden from view. Because photography is prohibited inside many detention settings, she developed creative strategies to work around the absence of images, using AI to recreate emotionally charged experiences and give form to memories that institutions attempted to erase. Her presentation brought together students, educators, artists, and community members for a powerful conversation about justice, representation, and the ethics of visual storytelling.
The audience reflected a diverse demographic of emerging photographers, advocates, and art‑interested community members who connected deeply with the themes of visibility and lived experience. Pop Goes the Easel supported this program by amplifying the event, highlighting Milan’s voice, and photography coverage of the event. The session resonated strongly with attendees, sparking thoughtful discussion and marking the event as a meaningful and successful contribution to the region’s arts community.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event such a meaningful and impactful gathering.
